I said I would periodically review books of note within the speculative fiction category, so here's the latest: my Goodreads review on Writers of the Future, Volume 29. Since it's an anthology, I did mini-reviews on each of the following stories:
What is speculative fiction? Most people are familiar with genres like fantasy and sci-fi, but fewer people know what speculative fiction means. I wasn’t familiar with the term myself until a few years ago. The truth is, if you’ve read fantasy or sci-fi, you’ve read speculative fiction.
Many years ago, I discovered the Writers of the Future contest, a quarterly competition for today’s new sci-fi and fantasy authors. I’ve entered every quarter for the last four quarters, and, although I have not placed in the competition yet, I have enjoyed getting to know the Writers of the Future atmosphere through the anthologies of the twelve winning stories of each year. The stories are short, so you can read each one in about a half-hour to an hour. They also vary in tone, talent, and content, which (for me) is half the fun.
No author is self-made, but is a composite of all authors that he or she has read. Since my writing development has been influenced by so many authors, both past and present, here is a list of those who have contributed to important milestones in my journey.
I've been following authoress Gillian Bronte Adams for a while, and, for those of you who enjoy fantasy, her interactive serial "When Destiny Comes Calling" is a delightful read. The story follows Alexander Mitus Scott Beauford III, an unexpected hero who finds himself pulled into an adventure led by none other than Destiny herself. At the end of each episode, the authoress offers 3 options for the start of the next installment, readers vote on their favorite, and the adventure continues.
The tongue-in-cheek humor is, for me, especially entertaining. Take, for example, this snippet from episode eight:
I've been following Gillian Bronte Adams' blog for a while, and thought that those of you who like fiction might enjoy your introduction to her. So far, I have found her command of language worthy of a true writer, and her witty humor exceptionally entertaining. In particular, I have enjoyed her series "When Destiny Comes Calling," in which readers choose which direction the story shall take.
I write YA/adult fantasy & sci-fi that burns through the darkest realities with truth and redemption.
